Sports, camp, and school physicals performed at our urgent care are not covered by insurance and will be self-pay at the time of visit. Immunization records are required at the time of visit to complete the physical. These physicals do not replace your child’s annual wellness visit with their pediatrician, which is highly recommended for comprehensive care and continuity of care.

Why are school physical exams important?

School physical exams are important because they help ensure children are healthy, developing properly, and ready for both academic and physical activities. These assessments allow healthcare providers to identify underlying health issues that could affect a student’s ability to participate in sports or concentrate in class. During the visit, providers review medical history, check vital signs, evaluate growth, and assess vision, hearing, and mobility. By detecting potential problems early—such as asthma, vision issues, or joint concerns—families can take proactive steps to support their child’s well-being and prevent complications during the school year.

These exams also give parents and healthcare professionals an opportunity to discuss nutrition, physical fitness, sleep, and other lifestyle factors that influence a child’s growth and performance. Immunization records are often updated during these visits to ensure compliance with school requirements and community health standards. A school physical not only fulfills enrollment or sports participation needs but also promotes lifelong habits of preventive care and wellness. At Priority Urgent Care & Walk-In Clinic, our providers offer comprehensive school, camp, and sports physicals designed to help children stay healthy, active, and ready to succeed in all aspects of their education and development.

What does a school physical exam include?

A school physical exam includes a thorough evaluation of a child’s overall health to ensure they are physically prepared for academic and extracurricular activities. During the visit, the healthcare provider reviews the child’s medical history, including past illnesses, surgeries, allergies, and any current medications. The provider checks vital signs such as heart rate, blood pressure, temperature, and respiration, followed by measurements of height, weight, and body mass index (BMI) to assess growth and development. A physical examination typically includes checking the heart, lungs, abdomen, eyes, ears, nose, throat, reflexes, posture, and joints to ensure proper function and mobility.

The provider may also perform vision and hearing screenings to detect any issues that could affect learning or participation in activities. For students participating in sports, additional assessments focus on muscle strength, flexibility, and coordination to ensure they can safely engage in physical activity. Immunization records are reviewed and updated as needed to meet school requirements. At Priority Urgent Care & Walk-In Clinic, our compassionate medical team provides comprehensive school, camp, and sports physicals in a convenient setting, ensuring each child’s health, safety, and readiness for the school year ahead. Families can count on efficient service and personalized care during every visit.

How often should students get a school physical exam?

Students should typically have a school physical exam once a year, ideally before the start of the new academic year or sports season. Annual evaluations help monitor a child’s growth, development, and readiness for school activities. Because children grow and change rapidly, yearly exams allow healthcare providers to track important health markers such as height, weight, blood pressure, and overall physical fitness. They also offer an opportunity to update immunizations, review medical history, and detect any emerging health concerns that could affect learning, concentration, or participation in physical education and extracurricular activities.

For students involved in sports, many schools and athletic programs require a new physical each year to ensure the child is fit to play safely. Even if the school does not mandate an annual exam, regular assessments are beneficial for maintaining long-term health and well-being. Scheduling the visit a few weeks before school begins allows time to address any follow-up care or documentation needs. At Priority Urgent Care & Walk-In Clinic, families can conveniently schedule for school, camp, or sports physicals. Our team provides comprehensive evaluations to ensure every student is prepared for a healthy, active, and successful school year.

How long does a school physical exam take?

A school physical exam typically takes about 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the child’s age, medical history, and any additional forms required by the school or sports program. During this time, the healthcare provider reviews the child’s health history, measures height and weight, checks vital signs, and performs a thorough examination of the heart, lungs, abdomen, joints, and reflexes. Vision and hearing screenings may also be conducted to identify any issues that could impact learning or classroom performance. If the child participates in sports, the provider may perform extra assessments to evaluate muscle strength, flexibility, and coordination.

The process may take slightly longer if immunizations need to be updated, additional screenings are required, or specific health concerns arise during the visit. Parents can help streamline the process by bringing completed forms, up-to-date immunization records, and a list of current medications. School physicals are an excellent opportunity to discuss nutrition, exercise, and other healthy lifestyle habits.
