Does Priority Urgent Care and Walk-In Clinic offer EKG tests?

EKGs, also known as electrocardiograms, are diagnostic tests used to determine the health or any potential abnormalities in the heart. Common irregularities that an EKG can detect are arrhythmia (abnormal heartbeat), coronary heart disease, signs and symptoms of a heart attack, and signs of a previous heart attack.

What is an EKG?

An EKG is an electrocardiogram and is also known as an ECG. This is a special test that checks for problems or irregularities with the electrical activity of your heart. An EKG translates the heart’s electrical activity onto a graph as it traces the information on paper.
So much of a patient’s experience in the healthcare industry depends on these tests that an estimated 60 to 70 percent of all decisions regarding a patient’s hospital admission, diagnosis, treatment, and discharge are based on laboratory results.

Why would I need an EKG?

You may require an EKG to check the electrical activity of your heart. An EKG also can determine the health of your heart. For example, it can help diagnose the source of unexplained chest pain or other signs or symptoms of heart disease.

What can an EKG detect?

Arrhythmia — Arrhythmia refers to the irregular rhythm of the heartbeat. Normally, the heart beats steadily; however, when a person’s electrical heartbeat impulses fail to properly fire, the heart may beat too slowly, too quickly, or at irregular intervals.

People with arrhythmia may experience an occasional fluttering sensation in their chest. The heart may feel as if it’s racing for no reason in some cases. Although not all arrhythmias are dangerous, an EKG can detect whether the heart is out of rhythm and the severity of the issue.

The normal rhythm of a heartbeat is between 60 and 100 beats per minute. In tachycardia, the heart beats too fast and the resting heart rate will often be greater than 100 beats per minute. Conversely, in bradycardia, the resting heart rate is below 60 beats per minute. These irregularities may need to be treated with a pacemaker.

Heart Attack — When blood flow to the heart is suddenly blocked, a heart attack occurs. Although heart attacks come on suddenly, the buildup that caused the blockage accumulates over time and is usually a combination of cholesterol, fat, and other plaque-building materials. An EKG has the ability to detect when a person is having a heart attack or if they have previously had one.

Coronary Artery Disease — Also called atherosclerotic heart disease, coronary artery disease interferes with how the blood flows. An EKG can detect this issue. Narrowing of the arteries can also be detected in the case of an enlarged heart.

How long does an EKG test take?

During the test, you will lie down on a table and several electrodes will be placed on your chest, arms, and legs to check the electrical activity, heart rate, and rhythm of your heart.

The electrodes are connected to a machine that collects and records information of the electrical activity of your heart. While the electrodes record information onto a moving strip of paper, you will be asked to relax, lie still and breathe normally. The test is painless and no amount of electricity is sent through the body. An EKG only takes about 5 to 10 minutes.
