The fundamental difference is this: The ER (emergency room) is for major emergencies, and urgent care clinics are for minor emergencies. A major emergency is any emergency that is life-threatening, or that you believe could be life-threatening. A minor emergency is any non-life-threatening emergency.

The ER can handle minor emergencies, but only after taking care of major emergencies first. This means that if you go to the ER for a minor emergency, you’ll have to wait for service. However, if you go to an urgent care clinic instead for a minor emergency, you won’t have to wait long, as the clinic takes patients on a walk-in basis. Also, an urgent care clinic is the best place to go for care for chronic conditions, and for whenever your primary care physician isn’t available anytime soon.

Any kind of minor emergency care service or general healthcare service is provided at urgent care. This means you can go there for immunizations, occupational health, STD testing, treatment for common infections, care for minor injuries, chronic condition care, treatment for mild illnesses, and more.

Many of the services provided are the same ones your primary care physician provides, like physical exams, but with urgent care, these services are offered on a walk-in basis. This is especially convenient during minor emergencies like minor fractured bones or pre-employment physical exams!

With urgent care, you and anyone else in your family are welcome. You can bring in your children or elderly parents for care during any minor emergency or non-emergency.

If you’re planning on going to urgent care, then there are a few steps you can take to make sure your appointment goes smoothly:

• Put together a bit of a list of your concerns and questions to help you remember them
• Bring your medications if you think they’re relevant to your current health condition
• Bring your health insurance card too
• Come prepared to share your medical history with the doctor
