There are several different types of drug screenings, including:
• Urine Testing: Within 3 minutes of entering a private, single-toilet bathroom, you will be required to provide a sample of urine. It may be considered invalid if you flush the toilet after providing the sample. Once a sample has been provided, the tester will ensure it meets the proper criteria. For express urine tests, the tester will then test the urine sample for drugs. For lab-based urine tests, the sample will be sent to a laboratory. Lab results typically take 2-5 business days. If your sample does not meet the proper criteria, you may be directed to return to the waiting room until you can provide a sample that meets all of the requirements. You will be contacted by a medical review officer if either your lab-based drug screen is positive or if your express drug screen is confirmed positive at the lab. With the information you put down on your intake form, the medical review officer will contact you. Please ensure that this information is correct. The responsibility of the medical review officer is to determine whether the positive drug screen was due to legitimate reasons for drug use or if it is due to illegal, illicit, or prescription drug misuse.
• Oral Fluid Drug Testing: So that the quality of testing is not affected, you must spit out any gum or tobacco that you have in your mouth. With the use of an oral fluid collection device, you will then be required to provide a sample of your saliva. For an express oral fluid test, the tester will determine if any substances are present in your sample. For a lab-based oral fluid test, the tester will send the sample to the laboratory. Lab results typically take 2-5 business days. You will be contacted by a medical review officer if either your lab-based drug screen or express drug screen is positive. Again, the medical review officer will confirm the positive results with you, so make sure the information you provide is correct and up-to-date.
You may be required to take a drug test by your employer to ensure that you are operating motor vehicles safely and not posing a hazard to the health of others. Drug tests may be required if:
• You operate a commercial motor vehicle
• You operate heavy machinery
• You work with sensitive individuals
• Your work involves the public
• Your employer has requested one
There is little preparation that is required for a drug test. It is a good idea to stay hydrated, as you may be required to collect a urine sample. It is also important to avoid any prescription or over-the-counter drugs that may cause a false-positive.
While there are no known physical risks for a drug test, a positive result may affect your employment status, your sports eligibility, and the outcome of a court case.
